Since classes went online last March, students around the country have called for universities to refund tuition. Korea University (KU) has been no exception. As the first semester came to a close in June, KU students established the Tuition Refund Campaign Task Force (TF) to effectively begin negotiations between the school and its students.

The Tuition Refund Campaign TF claims that due to the transition to online classes, students had been unable to reap the benefits of the school’s infrastructure and activities—while tuition was paid in its full amount. For the past month, the Tuition Refund Campaign TF, with contribution from student unions of various departments, has been campaigning through one-person relay picketing and campus wall posters.

Following two unsuccessful conferences between KU Office of Planning and Budget and the Tuition Refund Campaign TF, a third was held on July 30. During this third conference, KU provided a briefing about the school’s financial expenses and also empathized with the students’ sentiment regarding tuition refund. The two parties agreed on the necessity of action and formulated the “COVID-19 Crisis Recovery KU Project” to compensate for the infringement of education rights and create an effective university system for the post-COVID-19 era.
