Beginning in the academic year 2025, Korea University (KU) has officially declared its intention to establish a college for undecided majors, with an annual quota of approximately 300 students. Although KU¡¯s School of Interdisciplinary Studies already admits 95 students who can later choose their definite major in the sophomore year, the plan is to quadruple the enrollment limit to create a new liberal arts (non-major) undergraduate college.
This initiative was implemented in accordance with the Ministry of Education¡¯s directive to promote innovation and learning opportunities, offering funding of 441 billion South Korea Won (KRW) to private and national universities that align with this goal. While establishing a new college is not the sole criterion to receive this funding, universities that exceed 25 percent enrollment in liberal majors earn additional points.
Feedback from KU students seems generally positive – ¡°Opening this new college would be beneficial as many highschoolers don¡¯t have the opportunity to contemplate about their future major based on their personal preferences,¡± mentioned an anonymous student from the Science and Engineering Campus.
